Should British Petroleum Be Allowed to Resume Oil Drilling in the Gulf of Mexico?

British Petroleum has petitioned the United States government to resume drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Read at least one story from each subheading on the linked page. You should see Blogs, United States, and Mississippi. You will link back to them on the post.

Link to the stories.

What is the general tone of the stories? Do they seem to be for or against resumed drilling? What is your opinion of BP resuming drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico? What alternatives could you suggest instead of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico?

The Fed: The Bank Run We Knew So Little About

The New York Times reports:
In August 2007, as world financial markets were seizing up, domestic and foreign banks began lining up for cash from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

That Aug. 20, Commerzbank of Germany borrowed $350 million at the Fed’s discount window. Two days later, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and the Wachovia Corporation each received $500 million. As collateral for all these loans, the banks put up a total of $213 billion in asset-backed securities, commercial loans and residential mortgages, including second liens.

Thus began the bank run that set off the financial crisis of 2008. But unlike other bank runs, this one was invisible to most Americans.

Until last week, that is, when the Fed pulled back the curtain. Responding to a court ruling, it made public thousands of pages of confidential lending documents from the crisis.
Defenders of the European welfare state have been quite quiet about foreign institutions needing a bailout from the Fed. How ironic, the highly regulated European banks needed more of handout from the Fed than American banks. According to Nancy Pelosi, this shouldn't have happened.

For all the grandstanding and fancy speeches Obama gave about Libya, it appears he does not have the intestinal fortitude to see it all through and so we’ve basically pulled out of Libyan military actions.

Two weeks after a dark-of-night barrage of mostly U.S. missiles and bombs opened the international air assault on Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi, the American combat role is ending, the rag-tag rebels are reeling and the Pentagon is betting its European allies can finish the job.
Gadhafi is still standing, with a few uncertain signs that his inner circle could crack. The Obama administration is hoping that if Gadhafi’s government doesn’t implode soon, a relentless campaign of airstrikes on his tanks, air defenses and most trusted army units will at least weaken his ability to survive a renewed uprising by a disjointed opposition. The rebels initially rattled Gadhafi but in recent days have given up most of their gains.
The bottom line, according to Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: “He’s still killing his people.”
So the mission remains incomplete, but the U.S. is following through on a pledge to shift the main combat burden to Britain, France and other NATO allies.
Starting Sunday, no U.S. combat aircraft are to fly strike missions in Libya. NATO’s on-scene commander can request American strikes in the days ahead, in which case they may have to be approved in Washington.
On Saturday, U.S. combat aircraft flew 24 strike missions in Libya, the Pentagon said.
Some in Congress, including Sen. John McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, have criticized the decision to withdraw U.S. combat aircraft from the regular cycle of NATO strikes.
Also withdrawing from the combat mission on Sunday will be the initial workhorses of the military campaign: U.S. Navy destroyers and submarines that launched Tomahawk cruise missiles from their positions in the Mediterranean Sea. No Tomahawks were fired Saturday, the Pentagon said.
In a nutshell, expect the Kept-Whores to go orgasmic praising their Messiah as a hero with courage to see tough fights through.
And if Gaddafi stays in power, the media will still praise Obama for being “smaht” enough to get us out…all the while ignoring the reasons he said we needed to get in there…..without any Congressional approval or consultation.

What underlies this photo is what war is all about, the loss of innocence, protection, ideals, softness, boyhood, happiness, joy, comfort, security, love, parents, siblings, friends and the right to live with dignity. The expression on his face says it all…………..

A young boy who said he had spent two days in besieged Brega and stolen a vehicle belonging to Moammar Gadhafi's forces in order to return to the rebel side, is questioned by rebel fighters near the front line east of Brega on April 3. Rebel fighters shot the tires out of the vehicle as it sped through the front line but released the boy after listening to his story.

At the risk of belaboring a point I have been making here for what now has turned into years, Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated on this day in 1968, was in Memphis in solidarity with sanitation workers, who were striking the city not just for decent pay and working conditions but for recognition of their right to form a union. In light of the concerted, ongoing campaign by Republicans to subvert unions, it surely is plausible to wonder how far we remain from the promised land of which King spoke the night before he was shot. King did not "lead" the Memphis strike; indeed, he struggled to keep pace with the radicalism and resolve of the strikers. Who might now aspire to that role?

Dr. MLK, Jr King Assassination Anniversary

Today is the 43rd anniversary of the April 4, 1968 assassination of the Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, TN.

I wanted to make sure I wrote a post about the anniversary this year because I'm still a little upset at myself that I didn't do one last year.   But then again I had a lot on my mind  at the time and the winds of change were blowing through my life once again..

But back to talking about this day.   Tavis Smiley calls him one of the greatest Americans our people have ever produced.    Well, I can think of a few others in that class such as Frederick Douglass, Dr. Dorothy Height and Justice Thurgood Marshall, but I agree he's probably at the top of that short list.

I've had more than a few things to say on this anniversary, and I'll let you read my commentary on this day in prior years.

Reflections About A King

Dr. King Assassination 41 Years Later

43 years later in this country, while on one hand race relations have improved on some levels, I also believe they have regressed as well thanks to conservative governments more concerned with sowing division in order to promote their political agenda.    They shortsightedly fail to realize that an America that works for everyone is a stronger, better country for all concerned.

Rest in peace Dr. King.  You were taken away from us before 'The Dream' became a reality, but there are people working to ensure that it does come true.

Mangum Arrested (Yet Again)

False accuser Crystal Mangum was arrested, yet again, reports WTVD-11:
Officers say they were called to the scene of a stabbing at a home located in 3000 block Century Oaks Drive, early Sunday. When police arrived they say they found a 46-year-old male who had been stabbed in the torso. The man was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of his serious injuries.Officers say they later arrested Mangum, 32, in a nearby apartment.Mangum is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. She is being held at the Durham County Jail on no bond.Investigators say Mangum is the victim's girlfriend, and believe the stabbing occurred during an argument.
Will the Group of 88 rally to her defense? After all, in her apologia for the Group of 88's ad, Cathy Davidson reached out to Mangum, lionizing her as a figure deserving sympathy, "a single mother who takes off her clothes for hire partly to pay for tuition at a distinguished historically black college."

Leading Marxist Manning Marable Dies - Once Wrote, Obama "Has Read Left Literature, Including My Works"

Manning Marable
One of America's leading academic Marxists, Director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies, Columbia University,  Manning Marable,  has died,  aged 60.

One of the most influential  black radicals of his era, Manning Marable was both activist and academic, playing leadership roles in several Marxist organizations and authoring  numerous books and articles, including  a soon to be released biography of Malcolm X .

Marable  even claimed the President of the United States Barack Obama as one of his readers.

In the December 2008 issue of British Trotskyist journal Socialist Review Marable wrote.
What makes Obama different is that he has also been a community organiser. He has read left literature, including my works, and he understands what socialism is. A lot of the people working with him are, indeed, socialists with backgrounds in the Communist Party or as independent Marxists. There are a lot of people like that in Chicago who have worked with him for years...
One of Marable's first confirmed radical affiliations was with the 1970s Marxist group New American Movement, founded mainly by veterans of the Students for a Democratic Society and the Communist Party USA. Marable's wife Leith Mullings (Feminists for Peace and Barack Obama) comes from a Communist Party background.

Marable was an early  member of  Democratic Socialists of America after it was founded in 1982 and by 1984 was a D.S.A. vice chair, alongside the likes of far left Democratic congressman Ron Dellums,  San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Harry Britt and Washington DC City Councilor Hilda Mason.

Like many socialists Marable was happy to work with communists. In November 1989 he addressed the 10th anniversary conference of the Communist Party controlled U.S. Peace Council, alongside two well known D.S.A. affiliates, Michigan  Congressman John Conyers and his Vermont colleague Bernie Sanders.

Marable was an almost annual speaker at D.S.A's Socialist Scholars Conferences in New York - which Barack Obama is known to have attended in the early 1980s.

In 1992, a new Marxist organization Committees of Correspondence was formed when a third of the Communist Party broke away to link up with DSAers, Trotskyists, Maoist, leftist Democrats and anarchists in an attempt to modernize and broaden the U.S. left. Marable became a co-chair of the new coalition.

Through C.O.C. Marable got involved in the LINKS network. This was an Australian based publication designed to link the Cubans,  former East German and third world communists  with Trotskyists and Maoists, black radicals, anarchists and "green" activists to form new leftist parties in several countries based on the model of the very successful (and now ruling) Brazilian Workers Party.

Interestingly President Obama has worked to forge strong ties to the Brazilian Workers Party leadership since assuming office.

In 1994  Marable was one of many D.S.A. and C.O.C. activists behind the New Party - a crypto socialist grouping aimed at nudging the Democratic Party to the left. While it didn't last long the New Party helped propel its best known members Barack Obama and DSAer/Democrat Illinois Congressman Danny Davis onto the national stage.

In June, 1996 Manning Marable led a delegation of fifteen prominent African Americans to Fidel Castro's  Cuba . Members of the delegation included Marable's wife : Leith Mullings , Professor of Anthropology, City University of New York; writer/editor Jean Carey Bond; political theorist Clarence Lusane; Columbia University Chaplain Jewelnel Davis; and DSAer Michael Eric Dyson, Visiting Professor of African American Studies, Columbia University.

During Marable's Cuba sojourn, he met many government officials, intellectuals and community leaders who as well as  having a lengthy conversations with Assata Shakur aka Joanne Chesimard an escaped terrorist cop killer from the U.S.

After meeting Chesimard, who is black, Marable wrote;
The struggle to destroy racism still remains a central challenge in Cuba: but on balance, the Cubans are far more honest about their shortcomings, and have achieved greater racial equality for Blacks than we have in the U.S....
In the late in 1990s Marable joined activists from D.S.A., C.O.C., Communist Party USA and other Marxist groups to found the Black Radical Congress. There is no evidence that Barack Obama attended the B.R.C.'s founding conference in Chicago in June 1998, but Obama's Marxist pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright as certainly there, as was future Obama "Green Jobs Czar" Van Jones.

On October 30 and 31, 1998 the radical  Brecht Forum celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the Communist Manifesto" at Cooper Union's Great Hall, New York.

Individual endorsers of the event included Manning Marable.

In 2006 -7 several radical groups including D.S.A., C.O.C., Communist party USA and several former leaders of the terrorist Weather Underground including Jeff Jones, Mark Rudd, and Obama allies Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn  to form a new radical umbrella organization Movement for a Democratic Society.

MDS February 2007. Mark Rudd far left, Jeff Jones, second from right, Manning Marable, center.

At M.D.S.'s February 2007 meeting in New York, Marable was elected Chair of the new organization. M.D.S. never really did take off, but it did last long enough to spawn an offshoot Progressives for Obama, in time for the 2008 Presidential election.

Manning Marable packed a lot of Marxism into his 60 short years.

His socialist legacy lives on on countless University campuses and political movements across the  across the nation - even  in the Oval Office itself.

Lil’ Wayne In Tax Trouble Again, IRS Files $5.6 Million Tax Lien

After recently paying off a $1.13 Million tax debt, rapper Lil’ Wayne faces uncle Sam again; this time for $5.6 million against his Miami mansion.

“The IRS filed the enormous tax lien against him Monday in Miami. Seems Lil Wayne, real name Dwayne Carter, can’t shake the tax man. In December, he paid off a $1.13 million federal tax lien, only to fall even deeper in debt this time. The IRS filed a $5,610,034 tax lien against Carter on March 28 with the Miami-Dade County Clerk. According to the lien, he owes income taxes from 2008-09. The address on the tax bill is his $12.9 million, 15,101-square-foot mansion on a private Miami Beach island.”

The Scott Sisters Won’t Get Pardoned by Gov. Haley Barbour

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University – Scholarship in Action
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour has stated that he has no plans to pardon Jamie and Gladys Scott.  When he was asked if he planned to pardon the sisters after releasing them from prison, Barbour told the Associated Press, "Tell ‘em don’t save any space in the newspaper for that to be announced."

Jamie and Gladys Scott were recently released after being incarcerated for an armed robbery that netted just $11 back in 1994.  The sisters were released on the condition that Gladys donate her kidney to Jamie, who has been diagnosed with kidney failure.  Gov. Barbour likely chose to release the sisters to alleviate some of the pressure he’d received for sounding like the racially-divisive political figure that he actually is.  Many of his comments about President Obama and black people in general made him sound exactly like the kind of man who’d be elected governor of a state like Mississippi.

Rutgers University paying snooki $32,000 to speak to students.

… and get this…. Rutgers is paying $2000 more for Snooki than they are for Nobel Peace Prize Winner: Toni Morrison who is scheduled to give the commencement.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — “Study hard, but party harder.”
Those and other words of wisdom delivered by “Jersey Shore” star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi to Rutgers University students Thursday cost the state University $32,000 in speaking fees, The Star-Ledger reported.
The fee is $2,000 more than the payment Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison will receive when she delivers Rutgers’ commencement address. It was funded by the mandatory student activity fees paid by Rutgers undergraduates, according to the newspaper. Most of the events financed by the fees are free for students.
The 8:00pm and 10:00pm question-and-answer sessions at Livingston Student Center in Piscataway, N.J., drew sold-out audiences of about 500 students, some of whom were brought on stage to learn the “Jersey Shore” fist pump or to be judged on their abs.
Snooki — who usually commands about $15,000 per club appearance or event, according to the New York Post — also told students her perfect man would be someone whose name ends in a vowel, who makes her laugh and who has a close relationship with his parents, The Star-Ledger reported.
And when asked to name her biggest inspiration, the diminutive reality star cited her skin tone.
“I’d honestly say being tan,” she said. “When you’re tan, you feel better about yourself.”
Some Rutgers students blasted the university’s decision to hire Snooki.
“As an RU student, I’m really ashamed,” one student tweeted, according to
“My tuition dollars wasted on Snooki,” another student wrote. “Rutgers probably could have paid her with a case of beer.”
Members of the Rutgers University Programming Association (RUPA), which organized the event, defended the high speaking fee, saying the group had been looking for someone who could appeal to the student community.
“We’re trying to provide different kinds of experiences to students,” said the group’s president, Ana Castillo.
University spokesman E.J. Miranda said RUPA made the decision to invite Snooki based on feedback from students and added that no state funds or tuition money are used for the association’s events.
“Nearly 2,000 students expressed their wish to attend an event featuring Snooki and a second show was added,” Miranda said in a statement. “The cost for her appearance included the fee for the moderator Adam Ace, a comedian who has been named College Comedian of the Year by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities, and the booking fee.”
Miranda — who noted that other RUPA events have featured informational programs on subjects such as autism, how to start your own publication and media and politics — added that the show was “promoted as a comedy act, not an academic program.” [source]

Michael Jackson Statue Erected At London Soccer Club

Mohamed Al-Fayed is a wealthy businessman who is best known outside the U.K. due to the fact that his son, Dodi, died in the same car crash that killed Princess Diana. But he also has a number of business interests—he formerly owned Harrods in London, and he currently presides over the Premier League soccer club, Fulham.

Al-Fayed was a former friend of Michael Jackson, and even once invited the star to take in a match at Fulham’s ground, Craven Cottage. That momentous event, and Al-Fayed’s friendship with Jackson, has now been made immortal due to the fact that the chairman has erected a rather odd looking statue of the singer outside the stadium—a move that hasn’t pleased a number of fans of he club.

"If some stupid fans don't understand and appreciate such a gift this guy gave to the world they can go to hell,” said Al-Fayed, turning on the charm. "I don't want them to be fans. If they don't understand and don't believe in things I believe in they can go to Chelsea, they can go to anywhere else.” [via Gigwise, who also have a photo gallery of the statue]

Washington - President Obama Announces 2012 Re-Election Bid

Washington - President Barack Obama formally launched his re-election campaign Monday, urging grass-roots supporters central to his first White House run to mobilize again to protect the change he’s brought over the past two years.

The official start of his second White House bid comes 20 months before the November 2012 election.

“We’ve always known that lasting change wouldn’t come quickly or easily. It never does,” the Democrat said in an e-mail to supporters announcing his candidacy. “But as my administration and folks across the country fight to protect the progress we’ve made — and make more — we also need to begin mobilizing for 2012, long before the time comes for me to begin campaigning in earnest.”

He told them he was filing the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, and directed them to his new campaign website where a launch video featured clips from supporters talking about their continued backing of the Democrat.

“I don’t agree with Obama on everything but I respect him and I trust him,” Ed from North Carolina says, delivering what’s certain to become a key part of the president’s pitch as he tries to re-energize liberals who have criticized some of his policies and independents who have fled from him in his first term.

Obama’s announcement comes just weeks after the commander in chief directed U.S. military operations to a third major warfront, Libya, and days after the post-recession economy showed more signs of a rebound with a report that the still high unemployment rate had fallen to 8.8 percent.

Widely expected, the procedural step of launching a campaign was planned to coincide with the second fundraising quarter of the year. Filing paperwork will allow the president to begin raising money in earnest for what advisers hope will be a record-breaking haul of more than $1 billion for his campaign, which is based in Chicago. That begins this month; he’s slated to visit major money venues of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

Obama faces no primary challenger.

On the other side, the race for the GOP presidential nomination is just getting under way; more than a dozen Republicans are considering seeking the chance to challenge Obama in the next election. Only a few have taken the initial steps toward a candidacy, though several more are expected to this month. It’s a wide open race with no clear front-runner.

Nevertheless, Obama said he’s not taking anything for granted.

“We’re doing this now because the politics we believe in does not start with expensive TV ads or extravaganzas, but with you — with people organizing block-by-block, talking to neighbors, co-workers, and friends. And that kind of campaign takes time to build,” he said in the e-mail.

“So even though I’m focused on the job you elected me to do, and the race may not reach full speed for a year or more, the work of laying the foundation for our campaign must start today,” Obama added. He directed them to the new red, white and blue website for what he said was “a campaign that’s farther-reaching, more focused, and more innovative than anything we’ve built before.”

The website features Obama’s new campaign logo — 2012 with the rising sun in the background, a version of his 2008 campaign logo — and announces that the campaign is kicking off.

“We’re opening up offices, unpacking boxes, and starting a conversation with supporters like you to help shape our path to victory, and this is where you say you’re in,” it says, urging people to organize and donate.
The video is a montage of testimonials from a demographically diverse group of backers who intend to stay involved in this campaign.

“It needs to reflect the changes that we’ve seen in the last two-and-a-half years,” says Katherine from Colorado. “Then we had an underdog senator. Nobody thought that he had a chance. And now he’s the president.”

Gladys from Nevada adds: “We’re not leaving it up to chance” and “It’s an election that we have to win.”
